SAINT MICHAELS BASED LYON DISTILLING CO. IS HELPING TO LEAD THE CRAFT SPIRIT INDUSTRY FORWARD
Columbia, Md. – MD MEP (Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership) the states leading manufacturing resource and service provider is pleased to announce the success and growth of Lyon Distilling Co., a small batch, micro distillery located in Saint Michaels, Maryland.
This grain-to-glass craft distillery was one of the smallest in the country and the first to distill rum in the state in decades. From the start, their vision was to create unique, small-batch spirits that challenged the standards, and that they enjoyed drinking. The two-person team, Ben Lyon and Jaime Windon, quickly gained attention for their innovative style and quality spirits.
In just a few short years, Lyon’s popularity has grown rapidly, and demand is high. Since 2015, Lyon has added eight team members, dramatically expanded their product line, quadrupled their production and storage capacity, and more than doubled their sales. Their growth is a testament to their market knowledge and ability to produce high quality craft spirits for the discerning drinker.
“Regardless of how large our distillery grows, we remain committed to preserving the integrity of our spirits: every batch is hand-crafted, from start to finish, with careful attention to each detail along the way,” said Jaime, Owner of Lyon Distilling Co.
For Jaime and Ben, the success and resurgence of the distilling industry is just as important as the success of Lyon Distilling. To help lead the industry forward, Lyon Distilling, and others founded the Maryland Distillers Guild. As president of the guild, Jaime Windon is dedicated to helping distilleries thrive in Maryland through start-up support, legislative efforts and consumer education and events.
As the craft distilling industry grows and evolves, small producers continue to innovate, and Lyon Distilling Company is doing that in ways never seen before. In an unprecedented collaboration, Lyon offered Gray Wolf Craft Distilling a manufacturing home within the walls of their Saint Michaels distillery. Gray Wolf is dedicated to the same grain-to-glass approach, and is focused on vodka, gin, and whiskeys that complement Lyon’s existing selection of spirits. The two teams create distinctly different spirits, under separate labels, but collaborate and work alongside each other in the distillery.
“Lyon Distilling is a great example of how Maryland manufacturers are innovating and strengthening our manufacturing industry,” said Mike Kelleher, CFO/COO of MD MEP. “Their growth is a reflection of their passion for what they do and the rebirth of the Maryland craft spirit industry is a testament to the efforts made by the guild.”
