Garrett Container Systems, Inc. (GCS) is an ISO 9001-2008 HUBZone certified small business, located in rural western Maryland. GCS was established in 1991 as a manufacturer of aluminum storage and shipping containers. Over the years, GCS expanded to become a system integrator of tactical deployment kits and a full line distributor of numerous top brands of tactical and support equipment, including nylon equipment and a new line of military working dog gear.
In an effort to meet the growing demand for both their core products as well as their new product lines, Garrett Container identified a need to hire a group of new employees in a three-month time-frame. With such an influx of new hires, Garrett did not have in place a new hire training or on boarding program that would provide a baseline set of skills and competencies to ensure that the new employees could immediately contribute to Garrett’s long-term success. Maryland MEP, a NIST MEP affiliate, and its partnership with Garrett College were brought in to help.
Maryland MEP delivered an extensive three-day rapid Boot Camp Accelerator program. The program provided potential candidates with a mix of life, basic job and basic manufacturing skills necessary to prepare them for a job at Garrett Container. Within the program, the new hires were introduced to HR policies, manufacturing safety and quality, and team work and leadership specific to Garrett Container.
